In his study on canonization, Philip Davies concentrates on the formation of a Judean social identity as an essential key to Jewish canonization. The period of Persian sovereignty over Judean-Samaria territory did not lead to a general stagnation in economic or educational perspectives, but rather the growth and rise of an increasingly sophisticated economic and political system. However, the benefits of such events inevitably turned catastrophic as the Greek empire disintegrated and the emerging Seleucid rulers began to diminish the ability of Jews to maintain their ancestral faith and practices. This action reached its epitome under Antiochus Epiphanes IV. The subsequent rise of the Maccabean struggle and the eventual victory and inception of the Hasmonean dynasty led to a previously unknown identity of both faith and politics which required new a delineation of canon.
